Gene Description

CG31099 encodes a 400-residue member of the insect ecdysteroid-kinase-like family containing a CHK-kinase-like domain. Such proteins are candidates for small-molecule phosphoconjugation, but the substrate and physiological role of CG31099 have not been established. A role in steroid metabolism or xenobiotic detoxification remains a family-informed hypothesis.

Summary: The cited study proposes family-wide detoxification-by-phosphorylation hypotheses from genomic and expression analyses. Its accessible abstract does not establish CG31099-catalyzed phosphorylation of an ecdysteroid specifically at position 22. The kinase-like family assignment supports a candidate catalytic role, but exact substrate and positional specificity require target-specific or well-resolved subfamily evidence.

Our results show the only two genes known to encode ecdysteroid kinases belong to different subfamilies and therefore ecdysteroid metabolism functions must be spread throughout the EcKL family.

Review rationale: Phosphorylation is plausible for this EcKL/CHK-kinase-like protein, but the available family study proposes rather than demonstrates the relevant reactions across this diverse family. No CG31099 substrate, product or catalytic assay is established in the accessible evidence, and the existing ecdysteroid 22-kinase TAS annotation is itself unresolved. Domain nomenclature and agreement with that annotation therefore cannot independently validate the process, although there is no evidence refuting it.
