Gene Description

UreB is the cytoplasmic beta structural subunit of the three-chain bacterial urease. It associates with UreA and the catalytic UreC chain in the UreABC apoprotein and contributes to urea hydrolysis by the mature dinickel complex.

GO Term Evidence Action Reason
GO:0005737 cytoplasm
IEA
GO_REF:0000120
ACCEPT
Summary: The reviewed UniProt record places UreB in the cytoplasm.
Reason: This is consistent with the soluble UreABC complex.
GO:0009039 urease activity
IEA
GO_REF:0000120
MARK AS OVER ANNOTATED
Summary: UreB contributes structurally to the heteromeric urease activity.
Reason: UreB does not independently enable urease activity; it contributes to activity of UreABC, whose catalytic binickel site is in UreC (PMID:8718850).

GO_REF:0000002
ACCEPT
Summary: UreB is the beta subunit of the UreABC urease complex.
Reason: Structural studies define bacterial urease as an alpha-beta-gamma assembly.
GO:0043419 urea catabolic process
IEA
GO_REF:0000120
ACCEPT
Summary: UreB is a required structural component of the urea-hydrolyzing complex.
Reason: Mature UreABC directly hydrolyzes urea.

NEW
Summary: UreB supplies structural integrity to the heteromeric urease complex.
Reason: The beta chain is a noncatalytic structural subunit of the alpha-beta-gamma assembly.

  • Q88J05 is reviewed UniProt UreB/PP_2844, the 105-aa beta structural chain of
the UreABC complex [ureB-uniprot.txt, "Urease subunit beta"].
  • The historical review at 86cf4fd8e9 was used only for comparison. Its
complex membership survives current review, but the individual enables
qualifier for urease activity does not.
  • Structural evidence places urease chemistry in the alpha/UreC binickel site,
while UreB is part of the alpha-beta-gamma assembly
[PMID:8718850, "Urease ... is an (alpha beta gamma)3 trimer"].
  • Q88J05 is curated as a contributor to GO:0009039, a member of
GO:0035550, and a direct participant in urea catabolism.
