Produces the phosphonoacetaldehyde substrate required by PhnX.
A reusable two-reaction bacterial pathway that degrades 2-aminoethylphosphonate through phosphonoacetaldehyde. PhnW first transfers the amino group to pyruvate, producing L-alanine and phosphonoacetaldehyde. PhnX then hydrolytically cleaves the carbon-phosphorus bond, yielding acetaldehyde and inorganic phosphate. Transport of 2-aminoethylphosphonate and downstream acetaldehyde metabolism are outside the module boundary.
The two exact UniProt exemplars are adjacent in KT2440 (PP_2208-PP_2209) and provide one representative for each required reaction. The module does not assume a specific transporter or regulatory system. Alternative phosphonoacetaldehyde-processing routes such as PhnWAY are separate variants rather than interchangeable with the PhnX hydrolysis step.
