Produces the C55 diphosphate precursor of the bacterial glycan carrier.
A reusable bacterial module that supplies the C55 polyprenyl-phosphate lipid carrier used for cell-envelope glycan assembly. UppS first elongates farnesyl diphosphate with eight isopentenyl diphosphates to form undecaprenyl diphosphate. An integral-membrane undecaprenyl-diphosphatase then removes one phosphate to generate undecaprenyl phosphate. The carrier supports multiple pathways, including peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharide synthesis; transfer of pathway-specific sugars onto the carrier and downstream glycan polymerization are outside this module.
The module represents carrier supply, not a peptidoglycan-specific pathway: C55-P is shared by several bacterial envelope-glycan systems. The same phosphatase reaction also returns carrier released as C55-PP after glycan transfer to the usable C55-P pool. PTHR10291:SF0 is asserted with its exact divergent official label "DEHYDRODOLICHYL DIPHOSPHATE SYNTHASE 2" because PANTHER places both declared bacterial UppS exemplars in that subfamily; preferred_term states the intended bacterial role. Species-aware research also identifies three PAP2-family candidate phosphatases, but their broad family membership is insufficient to assign undecaprenyl-diphosphatase activity.
