TreY/TreZ trehalose biosynthesis from alpha-glucan

A reusable two-reaction pathway in which TreY converts the reducing end of an alpha-1,4-glucan to a trehalose-containing alpha,alpha-1,1 linkage and TreZ hydrolyzes the resulting maltooligosyltrehalose to release trehalose. Alpha-glucan synthesis and remodeling, alternative OtsA/OtsB or TreS trehalose routes, and trehalose degradation are outside the boundary.

Exact UniProt exemplars delimit both reactions without restricting the module taxonomically. Q44315 and Q44316 are the Arthrobacter sp. Q36 TreY and TreZ proteins associated with the cloned gene pair and the separately purified enzyme activities (PMID:8605217, PMID:8611744, and PMID:8611745). The TreY and TreZ subfamilies are used instead of their much broader alpha-amylase and glucan-enzyme parent families. No molecular function or location is duplicated at module level, and no ancestral PTN node is asserted without verified PAINT IBD evidence.
